LEAF HEDGEHOGS AT THE FOOD MARKET – AND SCARY PUMPKIN CHUTNEY FOR HALLOWEEN…..three new teas – and chocolate Guinness cake!!!!!!
With the economic climate as it is, we are always trying to find ways to make the market more inclusive and accessible. Through our work on the Lambeth Food Partnership, where the focus has been on food poverty this year, Laura and I have managed to introduce ROSE vouchers into the market and into Telia’s on Church Road.
These vouchers are handed out to families in need with young children to be spent on fruit and veg only. We also have a food bank collection every week (in the yellow bucket) and this week’s requests include toilet roll, toothpaste and instant coffee.
Our next project will be a series of six cooking workshops called “Cooking on a budget”, partly funded by Croydon council. The first one will be with Rachel de Thample on the 14th of November. Rachel will show us how to shop and cook wisely to create a budget meal for four.
Need your scotch egg fix or wrap? Comfort & Joy have moved into the courtyard – find them next to Chas’s bread and the Grain Grocer.
Guest stalls this week
Kids – nature crafts with Secret Adventurers Club: Ema will be teaching us how to make leaf hedgehogs. So cute! Suggested donation £1.
Guest lunch by Mui Mui. This week Oksoon and Jia Nee are cooking up “Vietnamese grilled beef and noodles, Vietnamese chicken with turmeric lemon grass and rice, Malaysian chicken laksa noodle or Malay vegetarian curry with rice.”
Gluten free by Eat & Mess: Kate says “We got us some gluten, dairy and sometimes sugar free delights for the autumn weather!
Mexican chocolate meringue cake, apple and blackberry buckle cake, lemon bundt drizzle cake, sticky toffee slice with caramel glaze, blueberry coconut bakewell slices, chocolate brownies, rocky road tiffin, toffee apples on sticks, sweet potato, feta and chorizo tartlets and tomato pesto quiche. Dig in!
Oh and also, we are scheduling some extra dates for gluten free baking classes before Xmas due to demand so if CP locals fancy trying their hand at making their own, just ask on the stall for more details.”
Jams & more from Creative All Sorts: Christine’s stall will have “Scary Pumpkin Chutney for Halloween hotdogs, Christmas Chutney, Perfect Piccalilli, Berry Berry Nice Jam, Autumn Apple Jam, Cinder Toffee for the kids (of all ages) and beautiful nature inspired ceramic fridge magnets (great for Christmas gifts).” Find her on the Patchwork Farm stall.
Cakes by Brett & Bailey: Joe’s cake parade goes like this “The clocks go back this weekend, giving you a whole extra hour to enjoy some Brett & Bailey cake – that’s the point, right? Visit our stall to discover all manner of scrumptious autumnal treats. If you’ve not tried our pumpkin pecan pie, then don’t miss out – it features a generous layer of each filling, gentle spicing, and a crisp and buttery base. However, if a touch of fire is more your thing, head for our brand new fresh ginger cake with caramelised orange frosting, which is making its debut on the stall this weekend.
Usual favourites will include double carrot cake, apple and salted caramel cake, sticky buns, pear and maple cheesecake, insanely indulgent dark chocolate brownies with pecans and white chocolate chunks, and our all-time favourite chocolate Guinness cake. And if you can’t get enough peanuts in your life, then why not take home a peanut butter bar AND a chocolate peanut cookie? We’re bringing both. If that were not enough, we’ll also have plenty of jams; raspberry bakewells with the last of the British berries; and our last bomboloni of the year. We’re filling them with our special recipe salted caramel, and topping them with honeycomb – as voted for by you. Going to miss the market this weekend? Don’t forget that our online shop is always open. See you soon!”
Beer by Gipsy Hill Brewery: Local ale for sale.
Wine by Wine Scouts: This week Pedro is waxing lyrical about an organic Italian red – Nero d’Avola Baglio. “A full bodied, ripe and juicy red from the sun-drenched Italian island of Sicily. Packed with ripe black cherry fruit and hints of pepper, this supple wine is unoaked and has deliciously refreshing acidity. The Nero d’Avola grape variety is indigenous to Sicily, where hot sunny days and cool fresh nights provide the perfect conditions for growing ripe but beautifully balanced red grapes capable of highly expressive wines such as this.”
