WELCOME TO LambethWatch
Welcome to our regular new column ‘LambethWatch’ which will be taking a look at the more bizarre goings-on involving Lambeth council and their acolytes.
For new readers: Lambeth is a Labour-controlled council which is currently involved in an internal power struggle between its Blairite Progress wing and Momentum Corbynistas. (It’s not clear how many, if any, Labour councillors on Lambeth at present are actually in the Momentum wing of the party.)
Dissent is not tolerated – as Cllr Rachel Heywood found to her cost when, representing her constituents, she took part in a protest march against library closures in Lambeth. And got suspended from the party as a result. (There are only four opposition councillors on Lambeth.)
LAMBETH COUNTRY SHOW
On Monday (July 22) in the wake of a hugely successful Lambeth Country Show Lambeth council issued a press release headed ‘Lambeth Country Show hailed as huge success’ (Full text can be found at lambeth.gov press releases)
In it Cllr Lib Peck, Lambeth council leader, said: “We have worked hard to keep it as a free entry event in the face of serious cuts to our budgets.”
In the light of what News From Crystal Palace would publish on Wednesday, this would turn out to be scaremongering hogwash:
“LAMBETH COUNCIL INVESTED £100 MILLION IN BUILDING SOCIETIES LAST YEAR – Claims of no money for libraries or housing repairs in tatters” – July 20th
…….EVEN THEIR LABOUR FRIENDS ARE NOW HAVING A GO AT THEM
News From Crystal Palace has written much about the so called ‘Carnegie Community Trust’ and its relationship with Labour council.
The hugely unpopular secretive ‘trust’ of five include two former Lambeth Labour councillors and the life partner of a former Lambeth council leader who is no longer on the council.
It’s the group Lambeth council would rather deal with when discussing the currently closed Carnegie library at Herne Hill than talk to the Friends of Carnegie library or the Friends own trust.
But for how much longer? The so-called Carnegie Community Trust have put forward their own views on proposals by Greenwich Leisure to install a totally unwanted gym in the basement.
(Lambeth say they need funds from the gym to keep the library open because of extensive Government cuts and blah, blah, blah – see above).
The CCT say: “We strongly urge that GLL’s plans are revisited as a matter of urgency before any further step is taken in the planning process. “Our conclusion is that, as they stand, we would not be able to support these plans at the formal planning consultation stage.”
It would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic.
WATERLOO LIBRARY HAS CLOSED
Children and families coming to the launch party for the Summer Reading Challenge at Waterloo library this afternoon (Friday) will be turned away! Lambeth council have locked the doors and closed the library for good!
A ‘self-service library’ in the Oasis centre is set to replace this professionally staffed library and all the vital services it currently provides for the community. (Sources: Friends of Lambeth Libraries / Defend the Ten)
Perhaps Lambeth feared another Carnegie-style occupation…….
