“UNBELIEVABLE RESPONSE” TO BBC NOMINATION SAY FOOD MARKET
CRYSTAL PALACE FOOD MARKET say they have had an “unbelievable response” to their BBC Food & Farming awards best market nomination in which they finished joint runners-up.
“We are almost overwhelmed by the things that have been written” they add, listing some of the blogs:
Lover of Creating Flavours – Anita-Clare Field
Kitchen Counter Culture – Annie Levy
Crystal Palace Transition Town – Laura Jane Stacey
Toast and Butter – Anne Richardson
And we’ve been on the Robert Elms show!”
Meanwhile at the market – which has since been voted best food market by the loveFOOD website – this week:
Meat (back again!), fish, cheese, veg, fruit, eggs, wine, beer, butter, raw milk, bread, charcuterie, store cupboard refills, cleaning product refills, bee friendly and herb plants, gluten free, vegan, salads, cakes, pastries, lunch, gifts, coffee & music.
Kids: Face painting with Jacqueline. Plus Rose is going to play us some tunes on her wind up gramophone.
Guest lunch – home style curries from Simply Tay: Did you get a chance to try Tayyaba’s cooking last time? This week she’s cooking up “Veggie samosas, Chicken n capsicum curry, Aubergine potato curry, (Maybe spinach n Potato curry), Dahl, Rice, Yoghurt, Chutney & Home made chapattis.”
Lunch – weekly: Deli items from Comfort & Joy, proper ham sandwiches (or pastrami – and you can add cheese too) from The Charcuterie Board and Jacob’s Ladder burgers are back at last!
Meat by Jacob’s Ladder Farms: Jayne says “Our meat of the week this week is 20% off our own new season legs of lamb. Apologies, but we won’t have bread for a while – our baker Andy Forbes from Brockwell Bake is busy harvesting and baking bread for campers at Wowo.” Jacob’s Ladder are a collective of tiny organic and biodynamic farms in East Sussex and Kent that farm using traditional methods with rare breed animals, and come together to sell at Crystal Palace Food Market.
Wine by Le Grappin: Emma says “My hubbie Andrew Nielsen – Le Grappin Wines winemaker will be pouring at the market tomorrow. Come and ask him anything you’ve always wanted to know about wine and winemaking.. We’ll have refills and #Bagnums .. the most stylish thing in wine .. according to The SundayTimes!” [Yes, for the first, and probably last time, we’ve got a stylometre on our website! Pic above.]
Cured meats from The Charcuterie Board: Owen says”Big news! Starting in a couple of weeks, we’ll have a meat slicer at the stall. This will enable us to offer some exceptional products that we make, which we haven’t been able to show off before. We’ll be slicing to order Smoked Air-Dried Ham and Air-Dried Pork Collar (Coppa) from Native Breeds, and Chilli-Rolled Air-Dried Pork Loin from Moons Green. And you’ll all be able to have these meats in sarnies, or take them home for the week. We’ll also slice Pancetta, Guanciale, Hot-Smoked Belly, Pastrami, and our usual range of Saucisson & Salami. Thanks Laura & Karen for helping us out! This week – we’ll have Ham, Belly, Pastrami, ‘Nduja, Crackling, Beer Sticks, Wild Boar Salami, Mushroom & Truffle Saucisson, Wild Fennel Saucisson, and some big, fat Chorizo from Native Breeds. Yum. Sarnies galore, as always.” Ham sarnies £4, pastrami £5, and ask Mik nicely to add cheese to either for £1. The Charcuterie Board supplies British cured meats from Moons Green & Native Breeds.
Cheese from Blackwoods Cheese: Dave tells me to expect “regular deliciousness tomozza”. Thanks for that Dave! Blackwood’s Cheese are an artisan cheesemonger based in Brockley, who use organic milk from Kent.
Bee and butterfly friendly herb & flowering plants from Gipsy Hill Herbs: From Sarah “This week the lemon thyme is looking lovely and I’ve got fresh stock of delicious lemon verbena for teas and fruit salads too. Beautiful purple chilli plants and alpine strawberries, both with fruit starting to set. Still a good array of lavenders plus pink and white Gaura and the first of the Russian sage (Perovskia) just in bud ready for a great late summer silvery purple splash.” All plants grown with minimal environmental impact on a small independent nursery in Wallington. Follow Sarah on twitter – @GipsyHillHerbs.
Sustainably caught fish from Veasey’s: Dan’s mini fish update goes like this “G’day. We have the first of the Cornish sardine season starting today, and the return of mussels.” [I always know when Dan’s rushed off his feet, and today is clearly one of those days.] Please vote for us in the Sussex Food and Drink awards in the Sussex Food Shop of the Year 2016 category. Thank you!”
You can place an order in advance, or make a special request by phone on 01342 822906, by email on [email protected] and on Twitter @FishmongersFR Veasey and Sons. Savoury tarts – tomato-olive, spinach-leek, asparagus. Vegan also available. Bread – Sun-dried tomato and olive. Drinks – homemade ginger and mint lemonade.
Cakes by Cakertree: Made by Naomi.
Storecupboard refills from The Grain Grocer: Wade says “Hey folks. This week we’ve got raw pistachios with no salt added. They’ve been shelled too! Sour cherries are back in stock.”

Raw milk, butter, cream etc: From Hook and Son’s farmer Steve’s own organic herd near Eastbourne. The cows are out on the pasture now so everything tastes sweet. There is sometimes ethically raised rose veal from their own herd, alongside organic yoghurt, butter, ghee, cream and yoghurt drinks.
Hook Farm news – Teresa says “July has been quite a quiet month on the farm, which gives us a chance to catch up on some farm maintenance. We have repaired the cow’s winter housing, also the fencing around the farm which has made grass management better, and getting the cows in for milking a lot quicker; they don’t go everywhere so often now! We have done some muckspreading with our composted farmyard manure from last winter, the recent rain was great for washing it in.
Phil’s eldest daughter Caroline (who used to make our butter) died from a brain tumour earlier this year. Steve and his sisters are taking put in a Brain Tumour fundraising event in October by hopefully completing the Royal Parks half marathon in October. More details to follow.
We will also have some more rose veal available soon, if you would like some please contact the office to place your order.
No news on the proposed Taylor Wimpey development on the grazing land we rent here at Longleys Farm. Thank you for all your emails and letters of support.”
Fruit, veg & salad: Stein & crew at Brambletye, Jason, Paul, Tim etc at Brockmans, Adrian et al at Wild Country Organics and our own CP Patchwork Farm posse.
Brockmans: From Jason “Feedback from customers about the pick and mix loose salad leaf has been very good. Due to an abundance of some lines (cucumbers, sorrel and avocados) there has been a price reduction. Also on the stall – blueberries (limited numbers), plum, salad and cherry tomatoes, aubergines, cherries, 2 varieties of radish (from our own ‘in conversion’ site), purple mange tout, new charlotte potatoes, peas, french beans, salad rocket, land cress, wild plums, peaches, limes, clementines and oranges.
On The Farm – It’s been a manic few weeks, with staff managing the land and helping see crops through to harvest while in the barn some exciting new technology has been implemented.. We’re currently trialling a ‘fogging’ machine in our chiller, reputed to help leaf and other crops from carrots to cauliflowers stay at their best. We hope that you can notice a marked increase in the life and quality of already beautiful crops, it’s always sad when they don’t reach market in the way we would like them to!
Elsewhere there’s been a fair bit more work over at the new ‘Old Orchard’ site, with plenty more planting under way our range of salads will continue to increase in the coming weeks; plenty of weeding as ever as well, with squash, kale and brassicas receiving some TLC and the first courgettes starting to roll out last week… Multi coloured and divine, we hope you enjoy them! For all our market news, tweets & photographs: Brockmans Farm. Check out more pictures and videos on the farm Twitter feed.”
Patchwork Farm: Buy, sell or swap locally grown produce. Please do bring any excess seedlings you might like to exchange. Everyone’s welcome to volunteer on this stall – just ask at the stall.

Bread: From Chas & Momo’s Thornton Heath bakery, Bread Bread (at the Grain Grocer) and Brockwell Bake (on Jacob’s Ladder).
