“TRANSFER SOUTHERN TO TfL” – MAYOR
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has formally called for Southern Rail to be transferred back into public ownership after months of commuter chaos.
Mr Khan has written to the newly installed transport secretary Chris Grayling asking for Transport for London (Tfl) to be put in charge of the service until the problems plaguing the network are resolved.
Responding to the Mayor of London’s call for Transport for London to take immediate control of Southern Rail, Labour’s London Assembly transport spokeswoman Florence Eshalomi (Assembly member Lambeth and Southwark) said: “Of course this is the right step to take.
“When passengers are paying out a lot of money in fares, it’s anger-inducing that they are receiving such a poor service.
“Government’s weak approach to tackling Southern over their staffing issues and sub-standard performance has left passengers in purgatory.
“A TfL takeover is a sensible step towards addressing the problems plaguing Southern, which the government have so far been content to kick into the long grass.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Transport have told News From Crystal Palace: “The current situation with Southern is unacceptable and passengers deserve a far better service.
“We have been clear that the real solution is for the RMT to bring this dispute to a close and end the high levels of sickness absence amongst its members.
“Improving the situation is and will remain a priority until this issue is resolved.”
