TAKE THE SE ART TRAIL! ARTISTS AND ARTISANS PLAN OPEN STUDIO EVENT THIS WEEKEND
ARTISTS AND ARTISANS across five areas of South East London are combining to organise their own “Open Studio and House” event this weekend.
They will all be exhibiting their works in various locations in Crystal Palace, Anerley, Penge, South and West Norwood.
The Open Studio Trail, organised by the newly-formed SE Art Trail, is the brainchild of artist and art therapist Francesca La Nave, who had originally planned it for just the Crystal Palace area- but the idea has just snowballed.
“Crystal Palace is a really lively, creative place, bursting with potential” says Francesca. “Musicians know one another and get together all the time. “Some of the Artists know each other, but by and large art tends to be more solitary activity.
“Although the making of Art may not lend itself to joining in, it does not preclude collaboration. “I thought we should really start making contact.
“I’ve met a few artists in the last few years and the opportunity to form a group has grown through projects such as the Handmade Palace at the Crystal Palace Food Market and the larger network of Transition Town”.
Francesca’s idea follows in the footsteps of an art trail held during the Crystal Palace Overground Festival 2014 which was designed to run alongside the festival.
“But it actually competed with it” says Francesca “People wanted and needed to be at the festival, which is mainly in the parks and streets during the day – they didn’t want to be in studios and stay there”.
“While the overarching idea is for local artists to make contact with one another and have an ongoing connection, the immediate project is to launch an open studio event which doesn’t clash with the Overground Festival – and isn’t too close, or too far from Christmas.”
An informal meeting at Francesca’s home to form the new group attracted photographers, artists and printmakers as well as people who make ceramics, jewellery and textiles.
SE Art Trail now has a logo and a Facebook page and there are posters and leaflets advertising the event being held this weekend (November 21st and 22nd.)
