COUNCIL FLAGS AT HALF MAST TO HONOUR MP MALCOLM WICKS

1 Oct
COUNCIL FLAGS are being flown at half mast in tribute to popular Croydon North MP Malcolm Wicks, who lost his battle against cancer on Saturday.
Tributes have been pouring in following the death of Mr Wicks, who served the borough for 20 years. The 65-year-old announced he was being treated for the disease last October and pledged to keep serving his constituents.
Croydon council’s Labour opposition leader Cllr Tony Newman said: “Malcolm Wicks has made a major contribution to politics in Croydon both  as a dedicated and hard working local MP as well as serving as a much respected Minister in recent Labour governments.
“Perhaps the greatest compliment is the many moving tributes from both political colleagues and opponents alike, he will be sorely missed and today our thoughts are with his wife Margaret and all the family.”
Croydon council leader Cllr Mike Fisher said: “Malcolm Wicks was a dedicated constituency MP, a champion of Croydon and a thoroughly decent man who was always considered in his opinions and polite in delivering them.
“He worked with councils of both political persuasion in the interest of the town and was a pragmatic and responsible politician. “He will be a hard act to follow.
“Malcolm battled his illness with dignity, courage and a determination to continue representing his constituents. “He will be missed by everyone in Croydon. “I will miss him personally and I pass on my condolences to his wife and his family.”
Members of UNIT (Upper Norwood Improvement Team) observed a minute’s silence in memory of Mr Wicks at their meeting on Monday (Oct 1st) at the Phoenix centre, Westow Street, Upper Norwood.
