SPECIAL EVENSONG AT ST JOHN’S TO CELEBRATE 200th BIRTHDAY OF JOHN LOUGHBOROUGH PEARSON / SATURDAY AT CRYSTAL PALACE FOOD MARKET
St John the Evangelist church on Auckland Road will be holding a special Festal Evensong on Saturday July 8th to coincide with the celebrations for the 200th birthday of John Loughborough Pearson.
The evensong will be held from 5pm to 6pm.
Pearson designed and built Two Temple Place WC2, an absolutely magnificent (but small) building overlooking the Thames back in the 1890s – and was also the architect of St John’s.
Two Temple Place itself will be open to the public on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th July 2017 from 3 – 6pm.
“Let our knowledgeable stewards delight you with anecdotes and insights into the history of Pearson’s late-Victorian masterpiece” say Two Temple Place.
The afternoon will culminate with a lecture given by Dr. Barbara Bryant, author Two Temple Place – ‘A Perfect Gem’ of late Victorian Art, Architecture and Design.
She will focus on the history of the building, with an overview of the career of its creator, architect John Loughborough Pearson, and in particular his connection with his patron, William Waldorf Astor. The lecture will commence at 6pm and is expected to be finished by 7pm.
You do not need to register your attendance to the day, but if you wish to stay for the lecture we ask that you register for your free seat via Eventbrite, as places are limited. Please bring confirmation of your registration with you on the day.
Please note there will be no café on-site, though stewards will be happy to direct you to nearby eating establishments. Two Temple Place books and postcards will be available for purchase.

We’ve got a new haul of cheese in, including that very moreish Taleggio that always seems to go quickly. Plus, we got a nice half round of Provolone Piccante – with its sharp, buttery flavours it would make an excellent addition to an antipasto plate. Got some lovely smoked cheddar too, but that goes without saying…
On the meat side of things we’ll have our pastrami and cured pork bellies which are sure to go down a storm. And partnering these are some interesting salamis and chorizos. You’ll not be left wanting. Special offer on smoked chicken. And smoked prawns, lots of smoked prawns.”

As we’re on the cusp of cherry season, it’s time to bring back the B&B take on the dessert trolley classic – a boozy Black Forest gateau. You’ll find it on the stall alongside our Melba squares – light and lemony yoghurt sponge topped with shimmering rows of perfectly ripe peaches and raspberries. Both of these are divine with a generous spoonful of whipped cream.
Summer doesn’t end there – try a slice of limoncello-drizzled strawberry and white chocolate gateau; a scrumptious raspberry bakewell with crumbly shortbread and fudgy frangipane; or an old favourite such as double carrot cake; chocolate Guinness cake; white chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake; sticky buns; cardamom knots; indulgent brownies with Belgian Fairtrade 70% dark chocolate; and plenty of soft and pillowy bomboloni filled with pistachio cream.
Missing the market? Remember that the Brett & Bailey online shop is always open. See you soon!”
