Declared a genius for her award-winning, apocalyptic work, The Deluge, Winifred Knights (1899-1947) was one of the most original British artists of the first half of the 20th century. Her completed masterpieces will come together for the first time since their creation alongside nearly 120 preparatory works and life studies, providing a true insight into Knights’ artistic process.
8 June – 18 Sept
Dou in Harmony
Download high-res images
For the first time in over 350 years, two of Gerrit Dou’s (1613-1675) finest paintings Woman playing a Clavichord and Lady Playing a Virginal, will be displayed together. Dou in Harmony (5 July – 6 November), the latest instalment in the Making Discoveries series, will highlight how the Dutch Master interpreted the same subject but with varying changes to its mood and meaning. Drawing inspiration from Dou’s paintings, the display will be complemented by a contemporary sound installation in the Mausoleum, composed and played by Liam Bryne.
5 July – 6 Nov

Exodus

Dane Hurst and Company return to the Gallery following two sell-out shows last year (Prud’hon: The Moving Body) with Exodus, a new commission inspired by Winifred Knights’ “work of genius”, The Deluge. The work will trace the movement and narratives of groups captured within the painting through individual vignettes to be discovered by the audience, culminating in an apocalyptic climax running down the Gallery’s central space. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of drawing materials on entry to capture memorable moments of the piece.
6 – 11 September (excluding 9 September)

Insight Lecture Series: The Golden Age of Dutch painting: Landscapes, Seascapes and Interiors
In the seventeenth century, the Dutch republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe, leading in trade, science and art. Emerging from a bitter war, artists spurned Baroque splendour for calm realism, creating genres of painting reflecting everyday scenes which highlighted their rich social and cultural heritage. This series looks at three such genres.
