PUBLIC MEETING ON CENTRAL HILL ESTATE REDEVELOPMENT FEARS
“Residents have been shocked to find that their homes are at risk –
Lambeth have not made public any of their plans for our estate.”
A PUBLIC MEETING to discuss Lambeth council plans which residents fear could see the destruction of part – or all – of the Central Hill estate is being held tomorrow afternoon (Saturday March 21st ).
A leaflet announcing tomorrow’s meeting – being held at 2.30pm at Christ Church, Highland Road – says that after years of neglect by Lambeth council, Central Hill has been earmarked for ‘regeneration’.
“This can mean:
Demolition of part of or all of the estate
Reduction in affordable and social housing
High-rise and high density building to maximise profits” it warns.
But what Lambeth are actually planning for Central Hill appears to be shrouded in mystery. A Google search by News From Crystal Palace found two items which start:

But if you access EITHER of these all you get is an email address for

A spokeswoman for a group of concerned residents living on the estate explained to News From Crystal Palace: “In terms of the two consultation events you have linked to – there was never any more information online than this.
“Lambeth have not made public any of their plans for our estate. “There were four workshops in December – one for each section of the estate, and an estate wide consultation on January 17th (not the 9th). This was stage 1 of the resident consultation.
“At these Stage 1 workshops residents were given a short survey to complete asking what they like/don’t like about the estate. “There were architects from PRP* (who Lambeth have employed to design the redevelopment) along with council officers from the regeneration team – including Marcus Shukla whose email is on the website.
“OPEN AND HONEST”
“At the initial workshops residents were given a draft ‘principles of estate regeneration’ document which outlined the offer to tenants and leaseholders. “This states that Lambeth will be: ‘open and honest about the advantages and disadvantages regeneration can present’.
“But residents were not asked what they would think about the potential demolition of their homes.
“Instead the architects focused questions around street lighting, bins and footpaths. “Many residents have said that they did not understand what the workshops were about so didn’t attend.
“Residents have been shocked to find that their homes are at risk and felt their participation in the consultation was a ‘tick box exercise’.
“Many feel frustrated that it is Lambeth’s neglect and mismanagement of the estate that has caused it to fall into the disrepair they now say they can’t afford to fix (though they’re not giving us any concrete figures on that).
News From Crystal Palace has asked Lambeth council what is on the rest of the two Google links; whether they have issued any statements on their plans for Central Hill and if it involves total demolition; for cost figures on any repairs issue, and whether Lambeth council have stopped their consultation at Cressingham Gardens. A reply is awaited.
