PLANS FOR ‘THEATRE IN THE PARK’
Plans to stage a variety of shows on the Crystal Palace park terraces next year have been announced by a newly-formed theatre group.
A press release from the group says:
Crystal Palace Park Theatre is a non-profit organisation that hopes to run a trial programme in Crystal Palace Park in 2018, bringing a cultural centre to South London residents and visitors.
The month-long trial season would take place in July 2018, bringing open air theatre to the Palace Terraces, combining spectacular views with a combination of free and paid for theatrical and cinema programming, art exhibitions and community group workshops.
New and emerging artists of all genres will be promoted via pre-performance trailers. The venue will also be a place to eat and drink, with pop up bars and restaurants from the local area.
Productions would be briefed to work with the space, to create visually stunning and exciting content unique to the performance space, creating truly memorable experiences.
Shows would run for ten days or longer, interspersed with one-off comedy and music nights.
Family shows during the day would transform into cabaret shows at night and ‘secret’ events would satisfy the curiosity of audiences seeking the new and unusual, ensuring there is something on offer for everyone.
The trial season would aim to help Crystal Palace park become a national destination for the arts and the project is backed by a team with a wealth of industry experience, including well known south London residents and film and theatrical professionals Nicholas Pinnock, David Parfitt, Guy Chapman, Miranda Sawyer, Barry Grant, Kate Coyne and David Fry as Artistic Director.
To support the ongoing regeneration work in the park, there will be a Restoration Levy per ticket sold, that will be put towards the restoration of the historic terraces.
Crowdfunding for the project launches on 31st March on Spacehive and comments and public feedback on the proposal are welcomed either on the Spacehive page http://www.spacehive.com/crystalpalacetheatreandcinema or via Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/CPParkTheatre/ –
