Cakes – Eat & Mess (for the last time before Kate moves to the coast!) Kate says “Its our last planned market day this weekend, before E&M pack up whisks and cake tins to head to a dedicated baking lab in Clapham for September- hopefully we will still see some of you guys there at a class or two! To send us off with a baking bang, we’ve rustled up a host of delights for the good folk of Crystal Palace… here we go:
Chocolate Stout Cake – Rich chocolate & London Porter sponge cake, smothered in vanilla bean cream cheese frosting ; Pistachio Blueberry Sponge – pistachio & cardomom sponge cake layered with fresh blueberries & double cream frosting;Summer Carrot Cake – Carrots, apricots & sultanas baked in a cinnamon spiced sponge cake. Topped with cream cheese frosting & toasted walnuts. Plus Victoria sponge cakes, candied lemon drizzle loaf cakes, peach Melba slices, apple rose tarts, Mojito cheesecake squares, gingerbread men and always the Brownies- choose from rich cheesecake or dark chocolate. Peace & Loaf. XX”
Fresh pasta – Pastificio Mansi Emanuela says “This Saturday we have: Truffle ravioli; Artichokes and thyme half moon; Mozzarella cooked ham and spinach ravioli; Broad beans, peas and lemon zest ravioli; Tagliatelle; Gnocchi; Tomato sauce and pesto.”
Nicki’s Mushrooms: Mushrooms & cheese
Mushrooms & cheese – Nicki’s Mushrooms Nicki tells me “I’ll have new Atlantic sea salt off the coast of County Cork. Locally sourced cheeses – new black bomber, chilli goat, plain goat and a little french Comte. Plus truffle oils, salt and honey along with mushrooms.”
Preserves – Imogeni Locally made by Imogen.
Vegan / world food – Return to Shashamane Emilia is cooking up “Chickpea salad with wakame seaweed; kidney beans with cardamom seeds and fresh tarragon; butter beans with dill parsley chives; lentils with herbs on roasted aubergines; cabbage salad with herbs; kale salad with a garlic dressing and sunflower seeds; hummus; raw cauliflower salad; spicy sauce with cayenne pepper; quinoa salad with linseed , basil and pomegranates.”
Elvira’s Secret Pantry: Gluten free tarts
Gluten free – Elvira’s Secret Pantry Elvira is cooking up “Cakes: spiced apple, courgette and hazelnut, blueberry and lemon load, raspberry and rosewater loaf, blueberry and almond tart, vegan coconut and orange mini loaf, vegan chocolate and cranberry mini loaf. Savouries: spinach and leek flan, asparagus and peas quiche, tomato and olive tartlets, rainbow chard and bacon flan, vegan selection.”
Wine – Grape Juice Wines Nick’s back with a selection of wine.
Beer – Hiver Beers Beer, made with honey.
Buskers – Little Lapin Beautiful, chilled tunes to publicise their upcoming gig at Antenna Studios (where their album was recorded) on the 17th September. We’re in for a treat.
Lunch – Comfort & Joy Deli stall selling salads, pies, wraps (hot or cold), pies from Andrea.
Bread (& naughty brownies) – Chas & Momo Sourdough, rye bread, croissants, pain au chocolate, savouries and brownies. This week Chas has been making sun dried tomato & mozzarella focaccia, also rosemary focaccia.
Wild Country Organics: Summer goodness
Vegetables, salad, herbs & fruit – Brambletye Fruit Farm, Brockmans & Wild Country Organics.
Local growing project – Patchwork Farm (a Crystal Palace Transition Town project), selling locally grown food from our community gardens & gluts. Get involved and bring in your gluts – or come and man the stall for an hour or so on a Saturday (email Christine if you’re interested in either).
Christine says “We will have 250g bags of Rosemary salt and lavender sugar at tomorrow’s stall. These have been made from herbs donated by our network of growers and community gardens. They’re priced at £1.00 per bag.
Fresh produce – I will bring some herbs and possibly a few apples.
If any of our splendid growers have a glut of anything please do bring it along. I will be at the market from 10am.
Plants – we have 15 more beautiful, healthy strawberry plants at £2.00 each. Each plant comes with a tip sheet on how, when, where to plant them and get them settled before winter.

Veaseys: Paul showing a little friend how to fillet fish
Fish – Veasey’s Dan says “Hello Fish-tal Palace!. Don’t let the weather put you off BBQing some fine fish this weekend, we will more of those amazing large prawns, whole wild sea bass, Cornish sardines and Sussex caught mackerel. We have had good landings on Crab and Lobster so we have been busy cooking and will have plenty ready for the morning. The Foodbank – collection point at the market every week. Latest drop off (Tuesday 26 July) 20.2 kilos. Total donated so far 1020 kilos.
Handmade Palace has moved to The Paxton Centre, and had it’s soft opening on Sat 6th Aug. Beth says, “We will be having our grand opening on the weekend of Sept 10th / 11th! By then the full creative class timetable will be in place and the café up and running.
Until then you can enjoy our Handmade Palace picture gallery, art and craft shop plus classes in pottery, drawing and painting. The café will run a light café service selling cakes, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks to eat in or take away. I am now looking for..
