THE PALACE PINT / LOCAL HISTORY MEETING / DROP-IN EVENT – PLANS TO CONSERVE THE HISTORIC AREAS OF UPPER NORWOOD
THE PALACE PINT
Fancy drinking a pint or two of beer that you helped to create?
Many of you will be aware of the Palace Pint scheme, which started in Crystal Palace last year and involved people planting hops in their garden.
“These were subsequently collected and turned into The Palace Pint by Penge’s Late Knights brewery, and those who took part enjoyed a great session with the aid of a couple of free barrels at the Beer Rebellion” SAID A p said a Palace Pint spokesman.
“This year we’re hoping for even bigger and better results (and last year’s results were pretty fantastic!), so if anyone fancies growing some hops, please check out our Facebook and Twitter pages below.
“Over the next week or two we’ll be posting info on when and how to order plants, but the cost of one plant + starter pack is £20; £10 for each additional one” he added.

We’ve got a new weekly stall – British cured meats from the The Charcuterie Board. Here’s Owen on their special of the week. “Native Breeds, our charcuterie out west in the Forest of Dean, makes a mean Hot-Smoked Beef Brisket; known to our friends across the pond as pastrami. Matt, one half of The Charcuterie Board, and a native of New York, was stunned and confused that he wasn’t able to find a delicious pastrami in this country, so we got to work, and now it’s here.
We dry-cure Hereford beef briskets from a herd in Herefordshire. The brisket sits in dry-cure for about 10 days heavily laden with black pepper and coriander seed, and then hot-smoked in beech and apple-wood for about 6 hours. The aroma that accompanies the opening of the smoker door is a marvel to behold. £3 for 100g, sliced to order.” Sounds delicious! Find them in the Haynes Lane courtyard.

DROP-IN EVENT – PLANS TO CONSERVE THE HISTORIC AREAS OF UPPER NORWOOD
Residents are being asked for their views on three new conservation area plans.
The council has drawn up draft conservation area documents that will help preserve and enhance Harold Road, Church Road and Beulah Hill, which are considered to hold special architectural and historic value.
They will be available to view at a drop-in event from 3pm to 8.30pm on 12 February at Living Water Satisfies community café, Westow Street, Upper Norwood.
At the event there will be an exhibition that summarises the three conservation plans and there will also be the opportunity to discuss these with council officers.
Centred on one of Upper Norwood’s grandest residential streets, Harold Road is formed of large Victorian villas built for those attracted to the area in the late 19th century by the relocated Crystal Palace.
The Church Road area encompasses Beaulieu Heights, Sylvan Hill and Grange Hill, as well as several listed buildings, while Beulah Hill contains a significant grouping of Georgian and Victorian homes.
To view the different conservation plans visit www.croydon.gov.uk/caamps
They are also available at Central Library, Katharine Street, Croydon; South Norwood Library, Lawrence Road, and Upper Norwood Triangle Library, Westow Hill.
The deadline for responses to the consultation is Monday, 9 March.
