‘BACKING BROMLEY’ JUST A UNITE FRONT SAYS COUNCIL’S DEPUTY LEADER – “Out to cause political mischief”
A new organisation which has been criticising Bromley council is just a front for the Unite union, says the council’s deputy leader.
Cllr Colin Smith told News From Crystal Palace: “We are obviously aware of Unite the trade union’s crude ongoing efforts to cause political mischief locally by sponsoring misleading information across parts of the borough under the banner of ‘Backing Bromley’.
“That is clearly their business and we will deal with the politics and falsehoods of their claims via the usual channels in due course.
“If anyone is in any doubt about Unite’s work, they only need to look up who owns the domain name, which says it all and lists the contact address as being in Newcastle.
“Far more importantly to your readers though, no matter how much others might attempt to misrepresent the facts, Bromley council retains a long and proud record of delivering services that meet the needs of our residents.
“That will continue, despite the significant cuts being suffered to its budget by central Government as part of their own efforts to close the national budget deficit.
“Wherever valid and substantiated concerns about local public services are raised we will, as always, continue to deal with the issues on a fact driven case-by-case basis.
“To date it should be noted that this group has conspicuously failed to raise any issues that the council isn’t already aware of; has dealt with already or is in the process of dealing with.
“As to why Unite the trade union have been blocked on Twitter by a number of colleagues, those concerned and others have been bombarded with completely non-ward related ‘tweets’ over a number of weeks now, wasting irreplaceable time where they could otherwise be assisting local people with pressing needs instead, so I believe it is fairly easy to understand why to anyone with an open mind”.
A spokesperson for Backing Bromley said: “Backing Bromley is a new community group made up of thousands of residents that has grown to hold Bromley council to account for its failings.
“Backing Bromley is a coalition between the community and working people who serve Bromley and is also supported by Unite.
“Over 1,200 Bromley residents have raised placards in their gardens to show their support. “A further 1,000 residents have signed a petition calling on councillors not to disown residents and to stop failing Bromley .
“Bromley councillors stand accused of ignoring and disowning Bromley residents who clearly live in Bromley and they do so at their own peril. “Backing Bromley is growing and we are getting stronger.”
