MOONLIGHT WALKERS RAISE £20,000 FOR ST CHRISTOPHER’S
St Christopher’s hospice family bereavement services received an estimated £20,000 boost on Saturday night as hundreds of walkers turned out late into the night to participate in the hospice’s Moonlight Walk. on Saturday 8 October.
The event began at 9pm with walkers going on either a family-friendly 3.5 mile ‘Hospice Loop’ starting and finishing at the hospice in Sydenham, or a four mile route ending at the Westow House pub in Crystal Palace. The two routes encompassed all five boroughs where St Christopher’s provides expert end of life care.
The event was opened by actor and Beckenham resident Jay (Junade) Khan, best known for roles in Game of Thrones and Hollyoaks, and who teaches drama at local PopGems Academy.
St Christopher’s joint chief executive Heather Richardson, also spoke before the event and explained just how the generous support of the local community keeps St Christopher’s bereavement work funded, and helps those who have lost a loved one get through very difficult times of grief.
St Christopher’s fundraiser Leo Thon said: “What a fabulous event! “Thank you so much to all the walkers, marshals and volunteers who came to our Moonlight Walk. “Through registrations and gate receipts alone we have raised over £4,000.”
Last year, 1,229 people accessed St Christopher’s adult bereavement services, while 296 families and 471 children were supported by specialist child bereavement project Candle.
NORWOOD SOCIETY LOCAL HISTORY
Building restoration and conservation is the subject of next week’s talk to Norwood Society local history – by a speaker from a Crystal Palace-based company which is one of the country’s leading building restoration, conservation and stonemasonry companies.
From St Pancras Station to St Paul’s; from Selfridges to the Palace of Westminster, wherever you go in London and much of Britain you will pass a building that Stonewest has played an important role in restoring.
Locally they restored the Brixton windmill, the brickwork of Stanley halls in South Norwood and many monuments in West Norwood cemetery.
“We are fortunate in having Nick Wilson of Stonewest explaining the techniques and challenges of their work” said a Norwood Society spokeswoman..
We will finish with our usual refreshments of tea/coffee and cakes.
The talk at the Upper Norwood Library, 39 Westow Hill, SE19 1TJ is on Thursday (October 20th) at 7.30 pm. Refreshments. Donations appreciated.
