200 HOMES ON SITE OF SAINSBURY’S? Food market and collectables market under threat?
PROPOSALS to build more than 200 homes on the site of Sainsbury’s and other retail units on Westow Street are included in draft proposals in the new Croydon Local Plan – proposals which could have a huge effect on the Triangle area.
Among the proposals – which News From Crystal Palace emphasise are vague and woolly rather than detailed:
Plans to build between 39 and 223 homes on the site of Sainsbury’s, Westow Street as part of a ‘retail, replacement community use and residential’ option. The option covers the entire Norwood Heights site including Coxwell Road, both outside car parks, Phoenix community centre and all retail premises up to Haynes Lane. (page 381).
When Morrisons gave up the lease of the former Safeway premises traders in the area suffered a huge fall in business until Sainsbury’s moved in.
Bedwardine Road Cultural and creative enterprise centre: “An existing recording studio that is seeking to expand their offer will provide greater support for the cultural creative sector” Antenna studios occupy the part of the site which fronts onto Bedwardine Road. (page 375)
But an accompanying map embraces the whole site of the former Bowyers builders yard – where the hugely popular Saturday Crystal Palace food market and Haynes Lane collectables market are. (page 376)
Elsewhere there are plans to build a new hall and residential dwellings on the site of the existing church hall, vicarage and all of the garden land in the grounds of St John’s church, Auckland Road (page 379).
A drop-in session on the plan is being held this Wednesday (9 December) from 4pm – 8pm at South Norwood Methodist church, Suffolk Road, South Norwood SE25 6EG, (on Norbury, Thornton Heath, South Norwood & Woodside and Crystal Palace & Upper Norwood).
No press release has been issued by Croydon on the proposals. A copy of the plans is available to view on the first floor of Upper Norwood joint library, Westow Hill during opening hours.
